Workforce changes target corporate functions
In its announcement on October 20, NAB said it expects to reduce its internal workforce by up to 2,500 roles, or about 6 percent, during fiscal 2027. Up to 1,500 of those roles are expected to be removed before the end of calendar 2026. The bank also plans to materially reduce its use of consultants and external contractors.
NAB said the measures form part of a broader review of the workforce needed to support its strategy in a more competitive and technologically demanding operating environment. The bank intends to redirect capacity toward business banking, deposit growth, proprietary home lending and technology initiatives.
Chief Executive Andrew Irvine said the group's ambition and strategy remained unchanged. In the NAB announcement, he said the changes were intended to improve productivity, risk outcomes and execution. The bank expects no material impact on customer-facing banking roles and said it would focus deeper reductions on corporate functions and senior management.
FY27 costs move into focus
NAB expects to recognise an approximately 300 million Australian dollar pre-tax restructuring charge in fiscal 2027. The charge covers redundancy, redeployment and organisational redesign costs, compared with approximately 80 million Australian dollars incurred in each of fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026.
The November 5 release should give investors more detail on the timing of the charge, the expected savings and the balance between efficiency measures and continued investment. The scale of the planned workforce reduction makes the cost outlook a central measure for assessing whether the simpler operating model can improve returns.
Dividend remains part of the test
The interim dividend keeps shareholder distributions in view as NAB prepares to publish its full-year figures. The result will also give investors a fresh basis for assessing earnings, capital strength and the scope for future payouts.
