National Grid plans to invest up to GBP 400 million to extend the operating life of the Interconnexion France-Angleterre, or IFA, electricity link between Britain and France until at least 2050. The company announced the plan on Thursday, October 29, according to a Reuters report published by Euronext.
The programme will upgrade technical equipment, buildings and facilities at the interconnector site. It is designed to preserve the existing connection rather than create a new route, extending the working life of infrastructure that has been operating for four decades.
Why the IFA link matters
IFA is jointly owned by National Grid and French grid operator RTE. With a capacity of 2 gigawatts, it is Britain's largest subsea electricity connection by capacity and can supply enough power for about 3 million British homes each year.
The connection normally imports electricity from France to Britain, but it can also send power in the opposite direction. That flexibility gives the link a role in balancing supply and demand across the two markets. For National Grid, the project places established transmission infrastructure at the center of a longer-term network investment cycle.
National Grid stock traded at 14.96 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:11 CET on Monday, November 2, 2026. The quote stood alongside a bid of 14.95 euros and an ask of 14.98 euros. The available Xetra page for the London-listed utility did not provide a closing price for a daily comparison.

Investment supports network resilience
The announcement highlights the value of keeping existing cross-border capacity available as electricity systems become more interconnected. The IFA project also coincides with the link's 40th anniversary, giving National Grid a long-dated infrastructure milestone alongside its current investment programme.
The plan does not set out a construction timetable or disclose RTE's investment amount. Investors will therefore focus on the scale and timing of spending, execution at the converter sites and the contribution from National Grid's wider network activities. The company's next scheduled half-year results are due on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
