- Argentina and the United Kingdom will present arguments over provisional measures before the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
- Navitas holds a 65 percent interest in Sea Lion alongside Rockhopper Exploration.
- The legal proceedings add uncertainty around a project targeting first production in March 2028.
Navitas Petroleum stock faces a legal test over the Sea Lion oil project near the Falkland Islands, with Argentina and the United Kingdom scheduled to present arguments in Hamburg on November 10 and 11. The hearings will address Argentina's request for provisional measures under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
SEVENSEAS Media reports that Argentina wants the United Kingdom to stop using exploration information, issue no further licences on the disputed continental shelf and protect the marine environment while the wider dispute proceeds. The request was lodged on October 13.
Sea Lion carries legal uncertainty
Sea Lion is operated by Navitas Petroleum, which holds a 65 percent interest, while Rockhopper Exploration owns the remaining stake. The field lies roughly 200 kilometres north of the Falkland Islands, which Britain administers and Argentina claims.
An Argentine court ordered the project suspended on September 16, according to the SEVENSEAS report. Argentina's government has also filed a criminal complaint against Navitas entities and other companies, while the report says the allegations remain unproven.
Navitas has said it does not expect the Argentine measures to have a material effect on the project or its timetable. The partners took a final investment decision in December 2025 and plan first production in March 2028, according to the report.
What investors should watch next
The November hearings are an immediate legal milestone, but they will not resolve the underlying sovereignty dispute. The tribunal's handling of provisional measures could influence the near-term regulatory and development backdrop for Sea Lion.
Navitas Petroleum stock remains tied to the project's progress, including offshore construction, financing and the partners' ability to maintain their timetable. Investors should distinguish the scheduled hearings from any later ruling on the merits.
The TA-35 provides the broader Israeli market backdrop for investors.
