- Netflix exceeded the third-quarter earnings estimate, while revenue matched expectations.
- The company lowered its 2026 advertising-revenue outlook because some product capabilities are rolling out more slowly than planned.
- Fourth-quarter revenue is expected to rise to 13.44 billion US dollars, with layoffs weighing on operating margin.
Netflix posted a third-quarter profit beat on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, but its advertising business became the central issue for investors. According to CNBC, earnings per share reached 87 cents, ahead of the 82-cent analyst estimate, while revenue of 12.87 billion US dollars matched expectations.
Revenue increased 11.8 percent from the year-earlier quarter, supported by membership growth, March price increases and higher advertising revenue. Net income rose to 3.66 billion US dollars from 2.55 billion US dollars, although Netflix said the year-over-year profit increase was partly helped by the timing of expenses.
Advertising outlook becomes key test
Netflix now expects advertising revenue of about 2.7 billion US dollars in 2026, down from its earlier forecast of roughly 3 billion US dollars. The company attributed the reduction to a slower-than-expected rollout of some advertising-product capabilities.
Co-CEO Greg Peters said the advertising business had delivered strong growth and still had a long runway, but acknowledged that Netflix was behind its aggressive target for the year. The company also announced new advertiser features intended to improve audience targeting and measurement.
For the fourth quarter, Netflix expects revenue of 13.44 billion US dollars, representing growth of more than 11 percent. The forecast is based on continued gains in memberships, pricing and advertising revenue. Netflix also expects recent workforce reductions to reduce fourth-quarter operating margin by about 120 basis points.
Profit strength meets execution pressure
The company narrowed its full-year 2026 revenue forecast to 51.1 billion US dollars, implying 13 percent growth. That figure is at the low end of the previous 51 billion to 51.4 billion US dollar range and below the 51.2 billion US dollar analyst expectation cited by CNBC.
The earnings mix leaves Netflix with a stronger profit profile but a more demanding monetization task. Subscription growth and pricing supported the quarter, while the advertising forecast reduction raises the bar for product launches and execution. CNBC reported that Netflix shares fell about 6 percent in extended trading after the October 20 update.
