- Nintendo's first-half profit rose despite lower sales and slower Switch 2 shipments.
- Software, digital sales and a US tariff refund supported operating profit.
- Nintendo kept its full-year targets unchanged as the holiday software lineup takes focus.
Nintendo reported stronger profit for the six months ended September 30, 2026, even as lower hardware volumes reduced sales. The figures, published Thursday, November 5, point to a widening gap between software momentum and the hardware pressure facing Switch 2.
Profit attributable to owners of the parent rose 11.0 percent year over year to 220.917 billion yen, while net sales fell 12.1 percent to 966.041 billion yen. Operating profit increased 49.1 percent to 216.500 billion yen, helped by stronger software contributions and a first-quarter refund of US tariffs that had previously been recorded in cost of sales, according to AFP.
Hardware slows as software gains
Nintendo sold 6.49 million Switch 2 consoles in the first half, compared with nearly 10.4 million in the prior-year period. Switch 2 software sales reached 24.49 million units, while digital sales rose 60.5 percent to 249.6 billion yen. The figures leave software and downloadable content as important offsets to weaker console volumes.
In the second quarter, from July through September, net profit fell 29 percent to 73.5 billion yen, missing the 82.2 billion-yen estimate cited by AFP. Nintendo nevertheless maintained its forecast for 310.0 billion yen in full-year profit, 2.050 trillion yen in sales and 370.0 billion yen in operating profit for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027.
Holiday releases carry the outlook
Nintendo also retained its target of selling 16.5 million Switch 2 consoles during the fiscal year. The release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Thursday adds a fresh software test, while the company expects its established installed base and upcoming titles to support engagement through the holiday season.
