ORLEN's October 22 regulatory announcement points to a material one-off charge before the Polish energy group publishes its final third-quarter figures. The company expects impairment charges of PLN 1.6 billion in the consolidated accounts for the third quarter of 2026, according to the Bankier.pl report.

ORLEN said the charges include PLN 1.6 billion in the Downstream segment, mainly related to spending on the New Chemistry project launched in 2021, and PLN 0.8 billion in the Energy segment. The group also expects to reverse PLN 0.8 billion of earlier impairments in Upstream & Supply. The figures are estimates and remain subject to review by the statutory auditor.

Operating trends remain mixed

The operating update showed weaker upstream and gas volumes compared with the third quarter of 2025. Crude oil, condensate and natural gas liquids production fell to 4,285 thousand barrels of oil equivalent from 4,633 thousand, while natural gas production declined to 21.6 terawatt-hours from 23.3 terawatt-hours.

Gas imports into Poland dropped to 39.4 terawatt-hours from 54.0 terawatt-hours. Gas sales outside the Upstream & Supply segment fell to 53.6 terawatt-hours from 63.3 terawatt-hours. Retail fuel sales also slipped to 2,936 thousand tonnes from 2,982 thousand tonnes, while retail natural gas sales decreased to 12.6 terawatt-hours from 13.0 terawatt-hours.

Other indicators were more resilient. Crude processing increased quarter over quarter to 10,083 thousand tonnes and stood 1 percent below the year-earlier level. Refining capacity utilization reached 94 percent, matching the third quarter of 2025. Electricity generation rose to 4.0 terawatt-hours from 3.7 terawatt-hours, and retail electricity sales climbed to 4.1 terawatt-hours from 3.7 terawatt-hours.

Results will settle the estimate

The impairment charges are non-cash items and do not directly affect operating cash flow for the current reporting period, according to the company announcement. They can nevertheless weigh on reported earnings and asset values, making the final accounting treatment a central focus for investors.
