Philip Morris International (ISIN US7181721090) published a European economic footprint study covering 2021 through 2025, linking its activities to nearly 164,000 jobs in 2025. The release dated October 15, 2026, gives investors a broader measure of the group's European transformation than quarterly sales alone, according to Philip Morris International.
Europe study puts scale on record
The study attributes nearly EUR 343 billion of total contribution to the European Union economy during the five-year period. It also identifies EUR 22.3 billion of spending with European suppliers, EUR 27.4 billion invested across European operations and EUR 39.5 billion of exports, according to Philip Morris International.
The employment figure includes nearly 22,500 direct jobs and additional positions supported through suppliers and the wider European economy. PMI also reported EUR 422 million invested in research and development across Europe, alongside approximately USD 2.2 billion in research and development activities in Switzerland during the study period.
Smoke-free products change the mix
The release says more than half of PMI's European net revenues came from smoke-free products in the fourth quarter of 2025. At group level, smoke-free products accounted for approximately 42 percent of total net revenues in the second quarter of 2026, while PMI estimated more than 43 million legal-age consumers worldwide as of December 31, 2025, according to Philip Morris International.
That mix is important because the company is presenting the European footprint as evidence of industrial investment, exports and research capacity rather than as a simple tobacco-volume story. PMI says its smoke-free products were available in more than 105 markets at the end of 2025, while its cumulative investment in developing and commercializing those products exceeded USD 16 billion since 2008.
Stock keeps the news in context
For investors, the study adds operating context to PMI's shift toward smoke-free products, but it does not replace the company's financial reporting or its regulatory risk disclosures. The company identifies marketing restrictions, taxation, competition, geopolitical developments and changing consumer preferences as factors that could affect future performance.
