Qualcomm stock faces a tougher profit path as memory costs and data-center investment pressure margins. Automotive growth remains a key counterweight.

Qualcomm's profit outlook faces pressure

  • Handset revenue declined sharply while automotive growth provided a counterweight.
  • Data-center expansion and pricing actions are central to the fiscal 2027 recovery case.
  • Investors are watching margins, design wins and the next quarterly report.

Qualcomm's fiscal fourth-quarter results cleared the headline hurdle, but an analysis by Investing.com published by Yahoo Finance says the quality of earnings and the near-term outlook are now driving investor concerns. The focus has shifted from whether Qualcomm can grow beyond smartphones to whether that expansion can protect profitability.

Quarterly revenue reached 10.44 billion USD, above the 10.14 billion USD estimate cited in the analysis, while adjusted earnings per share came in at 2.17 USD. Handset revenue fell 26 percent year over year to 5.14 billion USD, below the 5.25 billion USD estimate. The decline underlines the pressure from a weaker smartphone cycle and lower Apple-related revenue.

Margins become the central test

Qualcomm's gross margin was 52.4 percent, below the 53.2 percent expectation cited by Investing.com. The company guides QCT operating margins to 20 to 22 percent for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, compared with 24 percent in the September quarter. The lower range reflects the inclusion of data-center activities in QCT as well as investment ahead of artificial-intelligence accelerator and CPU revenue.

Management expects pricing actions to deliver their full earnings benefit only in the second half of fiscal 2027. That timing creates a more back-loaded profit profile: consensus fiscal 2027 earnings per share stands at 10.01 USD, below 10.54 USD for fiscal 2026, before recovering to 12.80 USD in fiscal 2028.

Diversification offers a counterweight

The non-handset strategy is producing measurable growth. Data-center revenue is expected to reach more than 650 million USD in fiscal first quarter, while Qualcomm is maintaining its 5 billion USD fiscal 2027 data-center target. The analysis also points to management's expectation that Samsung Galaxy S27 share will exceed 70 percent, which could help stabilize the handset business.

Automotive remains the strongest established diversification driver, but the investment case now depends on execution across several fronts. Investors will need evidence that data-center design wins can scale without permanently diluting margins, while higher prices must offset memory, fabrication, assembly and advanced-packaging costs.

The real-time quote of Qualcomm stock was 144.24 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 14:08 CET on Friday, November 6, 6.04 percent above the Xetra close of Thursday.
