- Oil-to-chemicals earnings remain the main near-term funding engine for Reliance's expansion.
- Retail recovery and Jio monetization are central tests for the group's next growth phase.
- New energy, consumer products and media could broaden earnings from fiscal 2028.
Reliance Industries is entering a broader growth test after a strong oil-to-chemicals quarter, with brokerages identifying five factors that could determine the group's performance through fiscal 2028. The assessment was published by The Economic Times on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The first trigger is sustained strength in the oil-to-chemicals division. The segment delivered its strongest quarter, supported by transportation fuel cracks, petrochemical margins, higher throughput, flexible crude sourcing and product placement. The analysis said brokerage forecasts point to continued downstream support, while also warning that refining margins could moderate as global supply conditions normalize.
Retail And Jio Set The Pace
Reliance Retail remains the main execution challenge. Its earnings were pressured by investment in JioMart, dark stores, technology and digital commerce. Analysts cited by The Economic Times view fiscal 2027 as a reset period, with the payoff depending on stronger margins and growth over the following two years.
Jio offers a different route to expansion. The business added subscribers and increased average revenue per user, shifting the focus from customer acquisition toward monetization. A possible industry-wide mobile tariff increase in December 2026 could support this outlook, although the timing and scale remain uncertain.
New Energy Must Reach Earnings
New energy is moving from capital spending toward commercial delivery. Solar modules and battery storage are progressing, while brokerages expect the division to begin contributing to earnings in fiscal 2028. The investment case will depend on whether solar, storage, green hydrogen and fuel-cell projects achieve meaningful scale and returns on capital.
Consumer products and media add further optionality. FMCG growth and JioStar's subscription and advertising businesses could strengthen the consumer ecosystem, but neither currently replaces O2C as the main earnings driver. The central question for investors is whether these businesses can grow while Retail recovers and refining margins remain supportive.
