- Saab and GA-ASI validated the LoyalEye airborne early warning system on an MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft.
- The new Sea Giraffe AMB D radar can detect, track and classify air targets at ranges of up to 250 kilometers.
- Both developments strengthen Saab's offering for persistent surveillance and naval situational awareness.
Saab reported two surveillance milestones during the week, spanning unmanned airborne early warning and naval radar technology. The developments add to the Swedish defense group's portfolio in areas where persistent detection and rapid target classification are central requirements.
Unmanned early warning advances
In a Saab press release dated October 28, Saab and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems said they had successfully flight tested an unmanned airborne early warning capability. The test integrated Saab's LoyalEye airborne early warning radar with GA-ASI's MQ-9B remotely piloted aircraft system.
The flight validated the integrated system's ability to detect, track and classify airborne targets from an unmanned platform. Saab said LoyalEye can operate independently or alongside manned airborne early warning and control aircraft, supporting persistent surveillance while reducing exposure for aircrews.
Naval radar broadens portfolio
On October 27, Saab announced the Sea Giraffe AMB D, the latest evolution of its Giraffe radar family. According to the company's press release, the system can detect, track and classify aircraft, drones, missiles and crewed or uncrewed surface vessels. Its stated air-target range reaches up to 250 kilometers.
The radar combines active electronically scanned array hardware with new software architecture and modern processing. Saab also highlights electronic counter-countermeasures against jamming and a modular design intended to support future upgrades.
