- Shell's third-quarter adjusted earnings nearly doubled year on year as refining margins reached a record level.
- The company lifted its planned share buyback to USD 5 billion for the next three months.
- Cash generation remained strong, while the 2026 capital expenditure outlook was reduced.
Shell reported a stronger-than-expected third quarter on Thursday, October 29, 2026, with adjusted earnings of USD 10.81 billion. CNBC said the result exceeded the LSEG-compiled consensus of USD 9.92 billion and marked Shell's strongest quarterly profit since the second quarter of 2022.
Record margins drive earnings
Shell said record indicative refining margins were a central driver of the quarter. The margin reached USD 42 per barrel, while the company also benefited from higher realised liquefied natural gas prices and stronger Integrated Gas volumes.
The chemicals and products division was a major contributor as refining economics improved. Shell also reported free cash flow of USD 16.3 billion and net debt of USD 39.7 billion at quarter-end, according to CNBC.
Buyback lifts shareholder returns
Shell announced a USD 5 billion share buyback programme for the next three months, up from USD 3 billion in the previous quarter. The company also reduced its 2026 capital expenditure outlook to USD 23 billion to USD 25 billion from USD 24 billion to USD 26 billion.
