SK Hynix stock faces a US licensing hurdle linked to China expansion and a proposed New York NAND project. Record AI-memory demand supports its outlook.

Licensing Risk Meets Record Demand

  • US licensing delays have complicated SK hynix's Dalian expansion and Solidigm's proposed New York NAND investment.
  • Third-quarter revenue and operating profit reached records as HBM4 shipments began and AI-memory demand remained strong.
  • Long-term agreements with major customers improve visibility for production planned in 2027 and 2028.

SK hynix entered the weekend with two opposing signals for investors: strong operating momentum from artificial-intelligence memory and a new regulatory obstacle for its expansion plans. Reuters reported on November 3 that US officials had not approved additional licenses for American chipmaking equipment intended for SK hynix's Dalian plant in China.

The delay matters because SK hynix has linked higher Dalian output to the financing of a planned US expansion by Solidigm, its NAND subsidiary. Reuters reported that Solidigm was considering two NAND plants in Marcy, New York, with proposed investment of 45 billion US dollars and potential long-term investment of up to 100 billion US dollars. Solidigm said it was exploring possible fab locations worldwide and that no decision on a specific project had been made. The Reuters report also said discussions were continuing over a separate license for equipment needed to maintain the Dalian facility in 2027.

AI Memory Keeps Results Elevated

In its October 28 results release, SK hynix said third-quarter revenue reached a record 104.6155 trillion Korean won and operating profit 83.3338 trillion Korean won. The company attributed the performance to higher prices for key memory products and demand for AI-related applications. HBM4 mass production and shipments began during the quarter, while the company expects HBM4 to become the mainstream product from the fourth quarter.

SK hynix also said long-term agreements with 14 major customers, including global cloud-service providers, cover more than half of its production capacity for 2027 and 2028. The contracts typically run for five years and provide greater visibility into future output. The company expects memory demand to remain supported by enterprise and consumer AI in the near term, with autonomous driving and robotics adding longer-term demand. These details come from the SK hynix results release.

SK Hynix stock traded at 774.00 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:12 CET on Saturday, November 7.

Investors can follow the real-time quote of SK Hynix stock while the licensing talks develop. The central issue for the equity story is whether access to US equipment can support Dalian output without delaying Solidigm's potential US build-out.
