Societe Generale reported record earnings for the third quarter and the first nine months of 2026 in a results release published on Thursday, October 29. The French bank also confirmed that its extraordinary 1.5 billion euro share buyback was completed on September 30.

Group net income reached 1.888 billion euros in the three months to September 30, up 24.1 percent from the same period a year earlier. Net banking income rose 7.8 percent to 7.173 billion euros, while operating expenses increased only 0.8 percent to 4.093 billion euros. The cost-to-income ratio therefore improved to 57.1 percent from 61.0 percent.

Record earnings improve operating leverage

The quarterly return on tangible equity rose to 13.0 percent from 10.7 percent a year earlier. The cost of risk stood at 28 basis points, within the bank's 2026 guidance range of 25 to 30 basis points. These figures point to stronger profitability while credit costs remain contained.

The bank's official third-quarter results release said revenue growth and operating efficiency supported the record outcome. Chief Executive Officer Slawomir Krupa said the group would continue executing its profitable growth strategy and pursue its 2029 targets.

For the first nine months, group net income increased 17.3 percent to 5.374 billion euros. Revenue rose 4.1 percent to 21.375 billion euros, while operating expenses declined 3.2 percent. Nine-month return on tangible equity reached 12.3 percent, above the bank's full-year target of about 11 percent, and the cost-to-income ratio fell to 58.8 percent, below the target of less than 60 percent.

Buyback leaves capital buffer

The completed buyback reduced excess capital available for distribution, but the common equity tier one ratio remained at 13.4 percent at the end of the third quarter. Societe Generale said this was around 320 basis points above the regulatory requirement. Investors will therefore focus on whether revenue momentum and cost discipline continue while risk costs remain within guidance.
