Revenue growth drives quarterly performance
Net banking income increased 7.8 percent to EUR 7.173 billion. Operating expenses rose only 0.8 percent to EUR 4.093 billion, allowing gross operating income to climb 18.7 percent to EUR 3.081 billion. The cost-to-income ratio improved to 57.1 percent from 61.0 percent in the third quarter of 2025.
Return on tangible equity reached 13.0 percent, compared with 10.7 percent a year earlier. The net cost of risk rose 10.7 percent to EUR 408 million, equivalent to 28 basis points, while the bank's capital position remained solid with a common equity tier one ratio of 13.4 percent at the end of the quarter.
Nine-month results move ahead of targets
For the first nine months of 2026, Group net income increased 17.3 percent to EUR 5.374 billion. Revenue rose 4.1 percent to EUR 21.375 billion, while operating expenses declined 3.2 percent. The resulting cost-to-income ratio of 58.8 percent was below the full-year target of less than 60 percent.
Nine-month ROTE stood at 12.3 percent, above Societe Generale's full-year target of around 11 percent. Revenue growth was also ahead of the bank's stated objective of more than 2 percent for 2026. These figures point to improving operating leverage, although credit costs and the performance of capital-markets activities remain relevant factors for future earnings.
Buyback completed as capital stays strong
Societe Generale also confirmed the completion of its extraordinary EUR 1.5 billion share buyback on September 30. The programme reduces excess capital available for distribution while the CET1 ratio remains well above the regulatory requirement.
The quarterly figures give investors a fresh reference point for the bank's progress against its 2026 profitability and efficiency goals. The next focus will be whether revenue momentum and cost discipline continue through the final quarter while risk costs remain within the bank's planned range.
