Standard Lithium is targeting a year-end investment decision for its South West Arkansas project, a major milestone for the developer's plan to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate in the Smackover Formation. The Northern Miner reported the update on November 3, 2026, citing comments from company vice president of government affairs Jesse Edmondson.
Standard Lithium stock traded at 1.32 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 14:12 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026. The company is advancing the project through Smackover Lithium, a joint venture in which Standard Lithium owns 55% and Equinor owns 45%.
Financing remains the key hurdle
The South West Arkansas project is designed to produce 22,500 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually over a modelled 20-year operating life. The partners aim to begin construction in early 2027 and start production in 2029, subject to the investment decision and financing.
The project carries estimated initial capital costs of 1.45 billion US dollars. A definitive feasibility study released in September 2025 gave the project an after-tax net present value of 1.28 billion US dollars and an internal rate of return of 18.2%, based on an assumed long-term lithium carbonate price of 22,400 US dollars per tonne.
Financing discussions remain active. The Northern Miner reported that Smackover Lithium had received indications of interest for more than 1 billion US dollars in project debt financing, while the company said technical due diligence was essentially complete and term sheets and equity arrangements were being finalized. The expressions of interest were not financing commitments.
Offtake supports project economics
Smackover Lithium has agreements covering up to 20,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate annually. The total includes an 8,000-tonne agreement with LG Energy Solution and an expanded Trafigura arrangement that can reach 12,000 tonnes a year. That combined volume represents about 89% of the South West Arkansas project's planned output if the optional Trafigura volume is included.
The project uses direct lithium extraction, a technology designed to recover lithium from underground brines without conventional evaporation ponds. The Northern Miner also highlighted the technology's remaining scale-up risk, noting that commercial DLE from oilfield brines is still relatively novel.
