- Strategy's reported earnings were driven by fair-value gains on its bitcoin holdings.
- Software revenue declined year over year while gross margin improved.
- Andrew Kang will leave the CFO role, creating a staged finance transition.
Strategy reported record third-quarter operating income after a sharp rise in the fair value of its bitcoin holdings, while its software business contracted. In its October 29 press release, the company said operating income reached USD 20.91 billion in the three months ended September 30, compared with USD 3.89 billion a year earlier.
The result included a USD 20.91 billion gain on digital assets. Net income rose to USD 19.53 billion, or diluted earnings of USD 44.75 per share, from USD 2.79 billion and USD 8.42 per share in the prior-year quarter. Net income attributable to common stockholders was USD 19.12 billion after USD 419.6 million in preferred-stock dividends.
Bitcoin accounting drives headline result
Strategy held 848,517 bitcoin as of October 25, according to the company. Its accounting framework requires bitcoin to be measured at fair value, so changes in the cryptocurrency's market price flow through reported earnings. The gain therefore reflects a change in carrying value and should not be read as cash generated by the software operation.
The operating business delivered a weaker top line. Total revenue fell 3% year over year to USD 125.4 million, while gross profit was USD 89.6 million. Gross margin increased to 71% from 70%, indicating that profitability held up better than revenue.
CFO change adds execution focus
Chief Financial Officer Andrew Kang will step down on November 5, 2026, and remain as an adviser through December 31. Chief Executive Officer Phong Le will serve as principal financial officer during the transition. Reza Virasteh, currently executive vice president of operations, is scheduled to become CFO on January 1, 2027, while Le retains responsibility for the financial management of the bitcoin strategy.

Strategy stock remains closely linked to bitcoin prices, capital-market access and the funding burden created by its preferred securities. The latest results show how strongly fair-value accounting can dominate the income statement even when software revenue moves in the opposite direction.
Broader market sentiment remains relevant for highly volatile technology and digital-asset exposures; see current S&P 500 market reports.
