- Target is expected to report third-quarter results before the market opens on November 18.
Target stock is heading into its next earnings test with analysts focused on whether a strong back-to-school start carried into the holiday period. In a note published on November 5, Truist Securities kept its Hold rating and maintained a 167 US-dollar price target, according to Investing.com.
Truist expects third-quarter comparable sales to come in close to, or slightly above, its 4.0 percent estimate. The firm said the quarter began strongly during the back-to-school season, but sales momentum slowed through October when measured against one-, two-, three- and four-year comparisons.
October slowdown raises holiday questions
Investor expectations also moderated during the quarter. Truist said buy-side comparable-sales expectations had started at 6 percent to 7 percent before easing to roughly 4 percent to 5 percent as the operating data softened. The firm retained its 4.0 percent comparable-sales estimate for the third quarter and its 4.2 percent estimate for the full year.
That setup leaves Target's holiday execution as the next major test for the turnaround. Truist said management could strike a cautious tone on fourth-quarter prospects even if the retailer delivers some upside in the third quarter. The comment points to a gap between near-term sales progress and the higher standard investors may apply to the holiday quarter.
