Tencent plans a new bond financing primarily to fund artificial-intelligence investment and chip purchases, adding a fresh test for the company’s capital discipline. The The Edge Malaysia report published Wednesday, November 4, said Tencent told fixed-income investors on October 12 that the planned offering could raise about US$5 billion.

The proposed transaction includes US$1.5 billion to US$2 billion in dollar tranches and 20 billion yuan to 25 billion yuan in offshore-yuan notes, according to people cited by the report. Tencent said the proceeds would be used primarily for general corporate purposes, with most of the investment directed toward AI-related capital expenditure and chip purchases.

Debt funds a costly AI expansion

The financing plan comes as Tencent increases spending to compete with ByteDance and Alibaba in artificial intelligence. Capital expenditure on AI projects and computing rose 176 percent to 52.8 billion yuan in the June quarter, while free cash flow fell by 13.8 billion yuan, according to the report.

The company also told investors it currently has no plans to issue shares or convertible bonds. That keeps the proposed funding route focused on debt, avoiding immediate equity dilution but increasing the importance of future cash generation and returns from infrastructure spending.

Tencent stock traded at 46.14 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 15:07 CET on Wednesday, November 4. The real-time quote of Tencent stock is available separately.

Results will test the investment case

Tencent’s investor calendar lists the third-quarter results for Wednesday, November 18. The release will give investors a closer look at AI-related spending, operating costs, monetization and cash generation after the sharper investment increase.
