Tesla stock faces a mixed third quarter as automotive revenue falls and AI spending weighs on profit. Services and FSD provide offsets.

Tesla balances growth and investment

  • Automotive revenue declined as lower average selling prices and battery supply constraints weighed on the core business.
  • Services and other revenue grew strongly, while active FSD subscriptions reached 1.74 million.
  • Management is expanding robotaxi and Optimus programs, keeping investment and profitability in focus.

Tesla reported a mixed third quarter on October 21, with stronger services revenue and cash generation offsetting pressure in its automotive business and higher spending on artificial intelligence. CNBC reported that the company exceeded analyst expectations for adjusted earnings and revenue, while common-shareholder net income declined from a year earlier.

Tesla generated revenue of 28.05 billion US dollars in the quarter, compared with 28.24 billion US dollars a year earlier, according to the CNBC report. Adjusted earnings came to 48 cents per share, above the 43-cent analyst estimate cited by the broadcaster.

Automotive pressure meets service growth

Automotive revenue fell 3 percent year over year to 20.56 billion US dollars. Tesla attributed the weaker performance to lower average selling prices and difficulties securing enough battery supplies to meet order demand. Vehicle deliveries reached 486,532 in the quarter, about 2 percent below the year-earlier level.

Energy revenue declined 16 percent to 2.88 billion US dollars. Services and other revenue provided a counterweight, rising 33 percent to 4.61 billion US dollars. The mix shows why Tesla's software, maintenance and related activities are becoming more important as vehicle pricing remains under pressure.

AI investment weighs on profitability

Net income attributable to common shareholders fell 29 percent to 787 million US dollars, or 22 cents per share, from 1.11 billion US dollars, or 32 cents, a year earlier. CNBC linked the profitability decline to increased spending on Optimus humanoid robots and other AI initiatives. Capital expenditure more than doubled year over year to 3.73 billion US dollars.

Free cash flow fell 62 percent from the prior year to 1.53 billion US dollars after turning negative in the second quarter. The combination of lower automotive revenue, weaker energy sales and heavier investment leaves execution in autonomy and robotics central to the investment case.

Autonomy remains the strategic focus

Active subscriptions for Tesla's FSD Supervised system increased 67 percent year over year to 1.74 million, while adoption rose from the second quarter. Tesla said FSD is driving demand where the system is available and that it continues to seek regulatory approval in additional markets.

CNBC reported that Tesla plans to give some customer vehicles access to FSD Unsupervised around the second quarter of next year. The company is also testing the Cybercab robotaxi and plans to expand operations beyond Austin. Elon Musk said the driverless fleet could begin contributing to Tesla's financial results in 2027, although he also acknowledged that the technology still requires substantial development.
