- Scania opened a new research and development proving ground in Södertälje on October 19.
- The facility is designed for electrification, autonomous systems, safety, vehicle dynamics and conventional technologies.
- Configurable test scenarios could give TRATON greater control over validation work for future transport systems.
Scania inaugurated a new research and development proving ground in Södertälje on October 19, giving TRATON engineers a dedicated site for autonomous-driving and active-safety tests. SDV Sector reported that the facility was built at an investment of SEK 975 million and covers about 85 hectares.
The site includes 13 kilometers of paved roads and 4 kilometers of gravel roads, alongside 230,000 square meters of paved test surfaces and 54,000 square meters of gravel. Scania said the proving ground is organized around electrification, autonomous systems, safety, vehicle dynamics and conventional technologies.
Testing moves closer to production
A central feature is the ability to configure active-safety and autonomous-driving scenarios with increasing complexity. The company cited automatic emergency braking, lane support and blind-spot warning among the functions that can be exercised in realistic traffic situations.
Three irrigated braking tracks use asphalt, concrete and basalt tiles to create different grip levels. The layout also includes a curve for braking while cornering, banked curves and gradients of up to 22 percent. Scania said the controlled environment should make tests more repeatable and replace work that previously required external facilities.
For TRATON, the investment adds internal capacity at a time when commercial-vehicle manufacturers are developing electric drivetrains, software-enabled assistance systems and automated-driving functions in parallel. Owning more of the validation process may help the group manage testing schedules and operating costs, although the project does not by itself establish a revenue or earnings contribution.
