Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company may take a larger role in Tesla's Terafab chip project in Texas, according to a Benzinga report carried by Yahoo Finance published Monday, November 2, 2026. The report cited supply-chain sources and said Elon Musk had softened his previous position on TSMC's involvement.
The two sides may reopen negotiations over TSMC taking primary responsibility for construction and operations at the planned facility. Equity ownership and investment arrangements remain under discussion, so the report does not establish a finalized agreement or a completed transaction.
Terafab plans remain ambitious
Last month, Musk said Tesla and SpaceX would build and operate the fab, with TSMC potentially limited to a sublease on part of the site. The latest report would represent a broader role for TSMC, although Intel's position in the project is still unclear. Intel was previously linked to the facility after Musk said Tesla planned to use Intel's next-generation 14A manufacturing process.
Production timing remains distant. Musk has said he wants a test chip working around May or June 2027 at a research fab in Austin, Texas, while volume production at Terafab is targeted for the third or fourth quarter of 2028. He described that schedule as an aspiration and pointed to potential advances in chip fabrication.
