Bookings outpace recognized revenue

Uber reported third-quarter results on November 4 for the period ended September 30. Gross bookings increased 20% year over year to 59.8 billion US dollars, while revenue rose 10% to 14.77 billion US dollars. Trips climbed 16% to 4.1 billion.

The performance was uneven across the platform. Delivery bookings grew 22% and Freight bookings increased 35%, according to Reuters. Mobility growth faced tighter driver availability, higher fuel costs and weaker conditions in markets including India, Brazil and Canada. Reuters also reported that Uber was spending more to recruit and retain drivers.

Guidance keeps execution in focus

Uber forecast fourth-quarter gross bookings of 63.25 billion to 65.25 billion US dollars and adjusted EBITDA of 3.13 billion to 3.23 billion US dollars. Reuters said the adjusted profit outlook of 95 to 99 cents per share was below the 1.06 US dollar analyst estimate compiled by LSEG.

The outlook leaves investors weighing platform scale against near-term operating pressure. Uber said it expects about 700 fully driverless vehicles on its platform by year-end and more than 2,000 by the end of 2027. The company also agreed to buy catering marketplace ezCater, while planning minimal to no further mergers and acquisitions through at least 2027 apart from autonomous-vehicle investment, Reuters reported.

For investors, the next quarter will show whether stronger delivery and freight activity can offset mobility supply constraints while Uber continues funding autonomy and driver incentives.
