- Third-quarter revenue rose 25.6 percent year over year to NT$74.24 billion.
- Capacity utilization reached 92 percent, while 22nm products accounted for a record 18.3 percent of wafer sales.
- UMC and AP Memory advanced a silicon-capacitor collaboration aimed at AI and high-performance computing systems.
United Microelectronics reported stronger third-quarter operations on October 28, while a separate partnership announced on October 22 linked the foundry to rising power demands from artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
According to Business Wire, third-quarter revenue increased 8.0 percent from the previous quarter and 25.6 percent from a year earlier to NT$74.24 billion. Operating income rose 24.7 percent sequentially to NT$18.64 billion, while gross margin improved to 34.0 percent.
Utilization strengthens foundry momentum
UMC said overall fab utilization reached 92 percent, with several 12-inch facilities operating at full capacity and 8-inch operations recovering. Wafer shipments rose 7.3 percent sequentially to 1.212 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers, a record quarterly level. The 22nm node contributed a record 18.3 percent of wafer sales, and 22nm and 28nm products together represented 35 percent.
The operating figures point to firmer demand across UMC's specialty-foundry portfolio. For investors, the next focus is whether high utilization and stronger advanced-node contribution can persist as additional capacity comes online.
AI power partnership moves forward
On October 22, UMC and AP Memory announced a technology and manufacturing collaboration for power-delivery solutions used in AI and HPC systems. In its press release, UMC said AP Memory's S-SiCap Gen2D silicon-capacitor designs completed tape-out and initial functional validation in the third quarter. Comprehensive system-level performance and reliability testing is next.
The initiative combines UMC's deep-trench capacitor technology with AP Memory's silicon-capacitor designs. The companies are also exploring capacitor-embedded interposers and landside capacitors, giving the project potential relevance to future advanced-package architectures.
