- Union Pacific handled 6 percent more revenue carloads in the third quarter while intermodal revenue increased 27 percent.
- Management retained its high-single-digit 2026 reported EPS growth outlook and set a 3.5 billion US dollar capital plan.
- Higher fuel prices remain a margin risk as the proposed Norfolk Southern combination moves through regulatory review.
Union Pacific reported record third-quarter results for the period ended September 30, 2026, with stronger freight volumes, pricing gains and fuel surcharge revenue lifting operating revenue. The company disclosed the figures in its October 22 earnings release.
Operating revenue rose 15 percent year over year to 7.197 billion US dollars, while net income increased 16 percent to 2.076 billion US dollars. Reported diluted earnings per share reached 3.49 US dollars, and adjusted diluted earnings per share came to 3.53 US dollars after excluding acquisition-related expenses.
What changed since the last report
The release adds operating detail to the earnings picture. Average terminal dwell improved 2 percent to 19.9 hours, freight car velocity increased 1 percent to 228 daily miles per car, and workforce productivity rose 5 percent to 1,219 car miles per employee.
Revenue carloads grew 6 percent to 2.293 million. Intermodal revenue advanced 27 percent on an 11 percent increase in carloads, making that business a major contributor to the quarter's growth. The reported operating ratio improved to 59.1 percent, but the adjusted ratio increased to 58.8 percent from 58.5 percent a year earlier.
Outlook still faces fuel pressure
Union Pacific retained its forecast for high-single-digit growth in reported 2026 earnings per share and maintained its longer-term high-single-digit to low-double-digit annual EPS growth target through 2027. The company raised its 2026 capital plan to 3.5 billion US dollars to support infrastructure, equipment and network performance.
Fuel remains a key margin variable. Union Pacific said higher fuel prices negatively affected the reported operating ratio by 140 basis points in the quarter. The proposed combination with Norfolk Southern also remains subject to regulatory approvals and the Surface Transportation Board's review.
