Universal Music Group reported stronger momentum in the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, with subscription growth accelerating and margins improving. In its October 29 results release, the company said revenue reached 3.394 billion euros, up 11.7 percent year over year at constant currency. Excluding the Downtown consolidation, revenue growth was 5.3 percent.

Subscription Growth Accelerates

Recorded Music was the main operating driver. Subscription revenue rose 19.2 percent at constant currency, or 9.5 percent excluding Downtown. Universal Music Group attributed the performance to continued subscriber growth and wholesale price increases, including benefits from its Streaming 2.0 agreements. Management also said market-share pressure moderated compared with the first half of 2026.

Streaming revenue in Recorded Music increased 13.5 percent at constant currency, or 4.7 percent excluding Downtown. Physical revenue rose 17.4 percent both including and excluding the acquisition, with strength across North America, Japan and Europe as well as across frontline and catalog releases. Downloads and other digital revenue declined, reflecting the continuing shift in music consumption formats.

Downtown Adds Scale

The Downtown consolidation broadened UMG's artist and label services capabilities and lifted the reported growth rate. Music Publishing revenue increased 7.5 percent at constant currency, although growth excluding Downtown was 1.5 percent. Digital publishing revenue rose 11.8 percent, while performance revenue increased 1.7 percent.

Merchandising and Other revenue fell 4.6 percent at constant currency because the prior-year quarter included more high-profile tours. That decline partly offset the gains in Recorded Music and Publishing. The company said direct-to-consumer merchandise sales benefited from a broader ship-to-home rollout on selected tours.

Margins Point To Efficiency

Adjusted EBITDA increased 9.0 percent at constant currency. Excluding Downtown, it rose 7.0 percent, while the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 0.4 percentage points to 22.4 percent. Recorded Music drove the margin improvement through lower relative A&R spending and tighter marketing and overhead costs, partly offset by pressure from revenue and repertoire mix.

Chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge said UMG intends to operate faster and with greater focus while investing in human artistry, streaming economics and new opportunities for artists and fans. CFO Matt Ellis described the quarter as clear progress and pointed to the strategic and financial benefits of Downtown alongside efficiency initiatives.
