- Revenue rose 2 percent in the third quarter, helped by copper and nickel.
- Iron ore output missed the Visible Alpha consensus, while Vale retained its 2026 production outlook.
- Higher freight and fuel costs weighed on adjusted EBITDA and profitability.
Vale reported a sharp deterioration in third-quarter profitability on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as lower iron ore prices and higher freight costs outweighed stronger contributions from copper and nickel. Reuters, in a report carried by Fidelity, said net profit attributable to shareholders fell 53 percent year over year to US$1.26 billion in the July-to-September period, below the US$1.70 billion Visible Alpha consensus.
Profit Pressure Meets Mixed Operations
Iron ore production declined 6 percent year over year to 88.4 million metric tons, missing the 90.1 million-ton consensus. Vale attributed the weaker output to lower run-of-mine supply at the Serra Norte complex. Adjusted EBITDA fell 24 percent to US$3.33 billion, also below the US$3.50 billion analyst estimate.
The revenue picture was more resilient. Net operating revenue rose 2 percent year over year to US$10.6 billion, supported by copper and nickel operations. That combination leaves investors with a mixed quarterly signal: the top line benefited from non-iron-ore businesses, while the group's largest volume driver faced weaker production and pricing.
Vale said it remains confident of reaching the lower end of its 2026 iron ore production guidance of 335 million to 345 million metric tons. The company also expects copper and nickel production to land near the upper end of their respective annual guidance ranges. The outlook therefore depends on whether stronger base-metals performance can offset pressure in iron ore and cost inflation.
Cost Trends Remain Central
Higher diesel, bunker fuel and freight expenses added to the pressure on margins. For investors, the next operational updates will show whether the Serra Norte supply issue was temporary and whether realized prices and logistics costs improve during the fourth quarter. The revenue increase provides support, but it does not remove the sensitivity of earnings to iron ore volumes and prices.
