Valero Energy Corporation reported a sharp improvement in third-quarter results on October 22, led by stronger refining performance and near-record refinery utilization. The company said its refineries supplied transportation fuels reliably during the quarter, while the St. Charles FCC Unit optimization project was completed on schedule and within budget. The figures come from Valero's earnings release.
Revenue rose to 46.098 billion US dollars from 32.168 billion US dollars a year earlier. Net income attributable to Valero stockholders increased to 6.828 billion US dollars from 1.095 billion US dollars, while diluted earnings per share reached 23.89 US dollars versus 3.53 US dollars in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were 23.90 US dollars, compared with 3.66 US dollars previously.
Refining Leads Operating Improvement
Refining operating income climbed to 8.782 billion US dollars from 1.610 billion US dollars. Adjusted refining operating income reached 8.774 billion US dollars, against 1.665 billion US dollars in the third quarter of 2025. Throughput averaged 2.972 million barrels per day, while refining margin per barrel of throughput increased to 39.24 US dollars from 13.14 US dollars.
The renewable diesel segment moved to operating income of 353 million US dollars from a loss of 28 million US dollars. Ethanol operating income rose to 272 million US dollars from 183 million US dollars, and production volumes averaged 4.8 million gallons per day, a new quarterly record.
Chief Executive Officer Lane Riggs said the St. Charles project increases production capacity for higher-value products, including alkylate and gasoline. The project is now operational and is intended to strengthen Valero's ability to supply transportation fuels, according to the company.
Cash Flow Supports Shareholder Returns
Net cash provided by operating activities reached 6.9 billion US dollars. After adjustments for working capital and the other joint venture member's share of Diamond Green Diesel, adjusted operating cash flow was 7.3 billion US dollars. Valero said shareholder cash returns represented 52 percent of adjusted operating cash flow.
Valero also ended the quarter with 9.8 billion US dollars in cash and cash equivalents, 8.6 billion US dollars in total debt and a net debt-to-capitalization ratio of 4 percent. The company repaid 100 million US dollars of debentures that matured in July and 426 million US dollars of senior notes that matured in September.
