- Third-quarter earnings showed refining as the main profit engine, while renewable diesel returned to operating profit.
- Valero agreed to acquire a former Houston refinery and plans to restart light crude processing by the end of 2027.
- Management also completed the St. Charles FCC optimization project during the quarter.
Valero Energy's refining business dominated the week's investor focus after a strong third quarter and a new Houston asset agreement. Valero Energy stock traded at 311.75 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:11 CET on Saturday, November 7, 2026.
Refining Drives Earnings Rebound
In its third-quarter release, Valero reported net income attributable to stockholders of 6.8 billion US dollars for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, compared with 1.1 billion US dollars a year earlier. Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached 23.90 US dollars, versus 3.66 US dollars in the prior-year quarter.
Refining operating income rose to 8.8 billion US dollars from 1.6 billion US dollars. Throughput averaged 3.0 million barrels per day, while the segment's refining margin reached 10.7 billion US dollars. Renewable diesel returned to operating profit at 353 million US dollars, and ethanol operating income increased to 272 million US dollars.
Houston Deal Adds Capacity Option
On October 30, Valero announced an agreement to acquire the equity interests of LYB Houston Hub Holdings from LyondellBasell for 320.5 million US dollars, subject to closing adjustments. The Financial Times Markets announcement said the transaction covers an approximately 700-acre former refinery site next to Valero's Houston refinery.
Valero expects to restart 165,000 barrels per day of light sweet crude processing capacity by the end of 2027. Completion remains subject to customary conditions, including the antitrust waiting period, and is expected by year-end 2026. The site also offers storage and logistics infrastructure and may support later investment in heavy sour crude processing.
For investors, the results highlight the earnings leverage of refining margins, while the Houston project adds a future capacity and integration option. Execution, regulatory clearance and the timing of the restart will determine how quickly the transaction contributes to operations.
