Valero Energy Corporation reported a sharp improvement in third-quarter earnings on October 22, 2026, as refining operations drove a broad recovery across its businesses. The company said net income attributable to Valero stockholders rose to 6.8 billion US dollars, or 23.89 US dollars per diluted share, from 1.1 billion US dollars, or 3.53 US dollars, a year earlier. The full Valero earnings release also showed adjusted earnings of 23.90 US dollars per share, compared with 3.66 US dollars in the prior-year quarter.

Refining drives the quarterly recovery

The refining segment generated 8.8 billion US dollars in operating income, up from 1.6 billion US dollars in the third quarter of 2025. Refining throughput averaged 2.972 million barrels per day, below the prior year's 3.087 million barrels per day, while the refining margin increased to 10.730 billion US dollars from 3.731 billion US dollars.

Valero's management said its refineries operated at near-record utilization rates during the quarter. Chief Executive Officer Lane Riggs also pointed to the completed optimization project at the St. Charles refinery in Louisiana. The project was finished on schedule and within budget and is intended to raise production of higher-value products such as alkylate and gasoline.

Other segments add operating support

Renewable diesel operating income reached 353 million US dollars, compared with a 28 million US dollar operating loss in the year-earlier quarter. Sales volumes averaged 3.4 million gallons per day. Ethanol operating income rose to 272 million US dollars from 183 million US dollars, while production averaged 4.8 million gallons per day and reached a new quarterly record.

The results also strengthened Valero's cash position. Net cash from operating activities was 6.9 billion US dollars in the quarter, while capital investments totaled 432 million US dollars. At September 30, 2026, the company held 9.8 billion US dollars in cash and cash equivalents and had 8.6 billion US dollars of total debt. Valero said its net debt-to-capitalization ratio was 4 percent.

Investor focus shifts to execution

For investors, the quarter underscores the earnings leverage of Valero's refining network when fuel margins improve. The scale of the refining contribution remains the central driver, while renewable diesel and ethanol provide additional operating support. The company operates 14 petroleum refineries in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom with combined throughput capacity of about 3.0 million barrels per day.
