Visa and Tencent are broadening their cooperation in cross-border payments and artificial-intelligence commerce. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding on October 29, according to Tencent's announcement.

The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation across cross-border payments, agentic commerce, enterprise AI and support for global business expansion. It combines Tencent's payment services, digital platforms and technology capabilities with Visa's global network and cross-border money-movement infrastructure.

Travel payments lead cooperation

The companies intend to develop payment solutions for travelers entering and leaving China. TenPay Global, Tencent's cross-border payment platform, and Visa Pay are expected to support transactions at participating merchants across the Weixin Pay and Visa networks, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.

The proposed work builds on an existing relationship serving international visitors to China. For investors, the plan extends Visa's effort to deepen payment connectivity around international travel and commerce without setting out a disclosed revenue target or implementation timetable.

Remittances and AI remain exploratory

Visa and Tencent also plan to deepen cooperation through Visa Direct, with the aim of making it easier for overseas senders to transfer funds into the Weixin Pay ecosystem. The companies did not describe the memorandum as a completed commercial rollout.

The agreement further covers AI-enabled commerce. Visa and Tencent will explore whether Visa Intelligent Commerce can support AI agents that help eligible users discover, select and purchase goods or services while keeping consumers in control. The companies also plan to examine developer-agent payment experiences and other AI-native commerce models.

The expanded relationship includes Tencent's overseas AI businesses and builds on cooperation involving Midas, Tencent's international payments platform. That earlier work has included gaming payments, international money movement, joint marketing and risk management.
