Volaris stock follows a record quarterly revenue milestone as fuel costs weigh on profitability. Management expects a softer fourth quarter.

Volaris balances growth against fuel costs

  • Passenger demand and ancillary revenue lifted quarterly operating revenue, while expenses grew faster than sales.
  • Management expects slower capacity growth and a lower EBITDAR margin in the fourth quarter.
  • Higher fuel prices remain the key pressure on profitability and the full-year outlook.

Volaris crossed a major operating threshold in the third quarter of 2026, but rising fuel and operating costs limited the earnings benefit. The Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier reported the results on October 26 for the three months ended September 30. The release was carried by Morningstar from GlobeNewswire.

Revenue growth meets cost pressure

Operating revenue rose 32.4 percent year over year to US$1.038 billion, the first quarter in which Volaris exceeded the US$1 billion mark. Passenger revenue increased as booked passengers reached 8.977 million, while total revenue per available seat mile rose 19.2 percent to 10.31 cents.

Costs advanced faster than revenue. Operating expenses climbed 40.2 percent to US$1.004 billion, and fuel expense increased 72.1 percent to US$377 million. Average economic fuel cost rose 57.4 percent to US$4.10 per gallon, pushing total cost per available seat mile 26.2 percent higher to 9.97 cents.

Positive EBIT, continued net loss

Volaris generated positive operating income of US$34 million, compared with US$68 million a year earlier. The airline nevertheless posted a net loss of US$26 million, against net income of US$6 million in the prior-year quarter.

EBITDAR reached US$263 million, broadly unchanged from the year-earlier period. Its margin fell to 25.3 percent from 33.6 percent as fuel, aircraft and engine costs weighed on profitability. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled US$823 million at September 30.

Fourth-quarter outlook turns cautious

Management expects available seat miles to grow by about 4 percent in the fourth quarter. It guides to total revenue per available seat mile of roughly 10.90 cents, cost per available seat mile excluding fuel of about 6.50 cents and an EBITDAR margin near 20 percent.

For the full year, Volaris targets capacity growth of approximately 5 percent, an EBITDAR margin near 21 percent and net capital expenditure of about US$350 million. The outlook includes compensation tied to aircraft grounded for GTF engine inspections and remains sensitive to fuel prices, demand and regulatory conditions.
