- Volkswagen reported nine-month revenue of EUR 233.4 billion, down from EUR 238.7 billion a year earlier.
- Special items, China weakness and lower-margin electric vehicles weighed on profitability.
- Management expects 2026 revenue of around EUR 315 billion and an operating return on sales of up to 1 percent.
Volkswagen Group reported a sharp deterioration in profitability for the first nine months of 2026 on Thursday, October 29, while management called for faster execution of its restructuring plan. The company said its operating result fell to EUR 71 million from EUR 5.408 billion a year earlier, according to its nine-month results release.
The decline was concentrated in the third quarter. Volkswagen posted an operating loss of EUR 5.860 billion, compared with a loss of EUR 1.299 billion in the same period of 2025. Quarterly revenue fell 6.3 percent to EUR 75.277 billion. The result included EUR 7.8 billion of special items, within EUR 8.7 billion for the nine-month period.
Charges mask weaker operations
The largest special item was a EUR 6.4 billion non-cash impairment of Porsche goodwill. Volkswagen also cited around EUR 1 billion of impairment adjustments on fully consolidated assets in China and additional expenses linked to the planned sale of Volkswagen Osnabrück GmbH. Earnings after tax were negative at EUR 2.720 billion for the nine months, compared with positive earnings of EUR 3.405 billion a year earlier.
Before special items, the group generated an operating result of EUR 8.8 billion and an operating return on sales of 3.8 percent. That underlying margin still leaves Volkswagen below the level management considers necessary to fund future investment. In a statement carried by RTÉ, Chief Financial Officer Arno Antlitz said the results showed that the company could not afford to lose time and had to act quickly and decisively.
Volkswagen attributed the pressure to a weak Chinese market, stronger global price and competitive pressure, tariffs and the higher share of lower-margin electric vehicles. Vehicle sales fell 11 percent to 5.9 million units in the nine-month period. Excluding Chinese joint ventures, the decline was limited to 1 percent, while European order intake increased 4 percent and battery-electric vehicle order intake rose 39 percent.
Outlook keeps investors focused
The group maintained an outlook for 2026 revenue of around EUR 315 billion and an operating return on sales of up to 1 percent. Volkswagen also expects automotive net cash flow of between EUR 3 billion and EUR 6 billion. Its cost program totals around EUR 31 billion and includes a smaller model range, simpler structures, lower overhead and more efficient plants.
