Volkswagen AG has opened an industrial vehicle dismantling line at its Zwickau plant, adding a circular-economy operation to the site. Renewable Carbon News reported the opening on Thursday, November 5, citing a Volkswagen press release dated October 28.
Volkswagen said the eight-station line can handle pre-series vehicles and, in the future, end-of-life vehicles. The conversion work and approval process were completed in nine months, three months ahead of the planned schedule, according to the report.
Zwickau adds circular-economy capacity
From 2027, the operation is planned to dismantle 4,100 vehicles a year in two-shift production and employ 100 people. Recovered original parts from the group's brands will be prepared for sale, while the site will also refurbish end-of-life vehicles and recover raw materials.
Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schafer said the operation would treat dismantling and reuse as an industrial value-creation process rather than a scrapyard activity. Andreas Walingen, head of Volkswagen Group Circular Economy, described the line as a milestone in scaling circular-economy processes across the group.
The project gives Volkswagen a new after-sales channel for original used parts, including body components, engines and transmission parts. The parts are intended to reach dealers, service partners, independent workshops and parts distributors through existing networks. Volkswagen is also developing a European partner network to scale related activities and manage logistics costs.
The broader strategy is intended to reduce reliance on primary raw materials, strengthen supply-chain resilience and create additional revenue opportunities through recycling, remanufacturing and second-life applications. Volkswagen said recovered plastic from one end-of-life vehicle could eventually provide material for three new vehicles, while European recycled-content requirements are due to increase from 2032.
Volkswagen stock traded at 72.27 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:14 CET on Thursday, November 5, 1.50 percent above the Xetra close of Wednesday, November 4. Investors are likely to view the Zwickau project as a modest operational expansion while the group continues to focus on cost control, electric-vehicle profitability and industrial efficiency.
