Zijin Mining highlighted the expansion of autonomous haulage at its Julong Copper Mine in an update published on Wednesday, November 4. The company said more than 70 autonomous haul trucks are operating at the site, with productivity close to that of human-driven trucks and fully driverless haulage achieved at the Zhibula pit.

The update was published by Zijin Mining. It describes the rollout as a safety measure supported by radar, image recognition, redesigned haul roads, expanded loading and dumping areas, traffic lights and dedicated traffic rules.

Drivers move into remote operations

One operational change is the move of former truck drivers into remote dispatcher roles. Zijin said a dispatcher now monitors the fleet from a control room nearly 1,500 meters lower than the high-altitude worksite where he previously drove trucks. The control room is about 10 kilometers from the pit.

According to the company, around 45 autonomous trucks were operating at Zhibula during the report, with vehicles returning automatically for charging when needed. The Julong program began in 2024, and Zijin has also deployed autonomous trucks at its Zijinshan Gold-Copper Mine in China and Norton Gold Fields in Australia.
