Alpenglow replaces TowerBFT on October 21
The change retired TowerBFT, Solana's previous consensus protocol, at slot 459,653,000, according to The Block. Consensus is the process validators use to agree on the valid state of the network. Anza, Solana's core engineering firm, said the live deployment reduced the designed finality path from 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds, the point at which a transaction can no longer be reversed.
The upgrade moves validator votes off the blockchain and combines approvals into a certificate. That removes vote transactions from blocks and changes how network activity is measured. The Block reported that Alpenglow reached mainnet-beta at approximately 14:00 UTC on October 21.
Galaxy sets the target at 150 milliseconds
Galaxy said on October 20 that Alpenglow was scheduled for the start of epoch 1064 and designed to reduce finality to around 150 milliseconds. The report also said a flat 0.8 SOL per-epoch fee would replace per-vote costs for validators. A validator is a computer that processes transactions and helps secure the network.
Fund flows offer a separate measure of market activity. TokenPost reported 6.7215 million USD of net outflows from U.S. spot Solana ETFs on October 19. Bitwise's BSOL accounted for 4.8816 million USD and Fidelity's FSOL for 1.8399 million USD of that daily total.
