- The ATX closed at 6,475.46 points on October 29, 2026, up 0.56 percent from the previous close.
- The European Central Bank left its key interest rate at 2.5 percent, while markets also reacted to fresh corporate earnings and technology-sector weakness.
- Alphabet's heavy AI investment spending and confirmed plans for ECB President Christine Lagarde to leave in February shaped the broader market backdrop.
The ATX finished Thursday's session at 6,475.46 points, according to the Vienna Stock Exchange. The Austrian blue-chip index gained 35.87 points, or 0.56 percent, compared with its previous close of 6,439.59 points. The exchange page reported the closing data at 17:50 Berlin time on October 29, after Vienna trading had ended.
ATX extends its recovery
Thursday's advance followed a 0.15 percent rise on Wednesday and a 2.54 percent gain on Tuesday. The latest close therefore extended the index's recovery over three consecutive sessions, although it remained below its 2026 high of 7,043.27 points listed by the exchange.
Individual index constituents showed a mixed but generally firmer pattern late in the session. The Vienna Stock Exchange displayed gains of 1.55 percent for AT&S, 1.37 percent for OMV, 1.35 percent for voestalpine and 0.97 percent for Rosenbauer at its 17:17 data update. These company moves are constituent-level observations and do not by themselves establish the contribution of each stock to the ATX's final performance.
ECB decision shapes the backdrop
The broader European market was influenced by the European Central Bank's policy decision. Reuters, published by Fidelity, reported that the ECB kept its key rate at 2.5 percent. The report also said ECB President Christine Lagarde confirmed that she would leave office in February. European stocks held their gains after the decision, while euro-zone bond yields edged lower.
Earlier in the day, Reuters highlighted corporate earnings as a central market focus. Energy shares benefited from stronger results and buyback news from Shell, while Airbus rose after maintaining its full-year forecasts. Technology stocks, by contrast, were under pressure after Alphabet reported a revenue miss and higher cash spending on artificial-intelligence infrastructure.
Investor focus turns to earnings
For ATX investors, the session underscored the competing forces currently affecting European equities: support from selected corporate results and a pause in official interest-rate increases, alongside concerns about energy costs, future monetary policy and the scale of AI investment. The next market move will depend on how these factors interact with company-specific results and incoming economic data, rather than on the index close alone.
