The ATX closed at 6,270 points on October 23, up 6 points or 0.1 percent. Rising energy prices helped the index recover from sharper losses during the session, while concerns about artificial intelligence valuations and France's finances kept risk appetite weak, Wiener Borse reported.
From the midday level of 6,427 points, the ATX lost 157 points, or 2.4 percent. OMV was the strongest major mover, while Raiffeisen led the declines in the banking sector.
Why did the ATX finish higher after a weak session?
The index opened at 6,263 points and reached a high of 6,323 points before falling to a low of 6,198 points. A late recovery lifted the benchmark into positive territory, even as the broader European market weakened.
Helaba analysts cited geopolitical tensions, heavy capital demand in the artificial intelligence sector and concerns about France's credit position. The ATX still lost 4.4 percent for the week, its weakest weekly performance since the Iran war began in March, Wiener Borse reported.
