The BSE Sensex finished Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 77,301.40, up 383.55 points or 0.50 percent from the previous session's close of 76,917.85. The gain marked a fifth consecutive advance for India's benchmark index, although the session was volatile and began with weakness.
According to India Today, the index opened at 76,853.11 and fell to an intraday low of 76,604.85 before reaching a high of 77,396.04. Lower-level buying helped the benchmark regain momentum and finish close to its session high.
Domestic sectors lead the recovery
Market leadership was concentrated in domestic-facing and cyclical areas. Bharat Electronics gained 4.56 percent and Titan rose 4.28 percent among the stronger Sensex constituents. InterGlobe Aviation, Bajaj Finance, ITC and Adani Ports also advanced, while banking, auto, metal and media shares supported the index.
Information technology was the main counterweight. Tata Consultancy Services fell 2.70 percent, HCL Technologies declined 2.23 percent and Infosys lost 1.65 percent. The wider Nifty IT index dropped 1.50 percent, even as the Nifty Media, Metal, Realty, Consumer Durables and FMCG indices posted gains, according to the same India Today report.
Foreign flows and global cues
The Hindu BusinessLine reported that foreign investors had bought Indian shares worth 821 million US dollars since the beginning of November. The report also identified expectations of renewed foreign inflows and the US midterm election results as important factors for sentiment. Brent crude was reported lower during the session, offering additional relief to a market sensitive to imported energy costs.
The broader market outperformed the large-cap benchmark. The Nifty Midcap 100 rose 1.55 percent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 2 percent, while the India VIX declined 2.83 percent to 15.28, according to India Today. The combination of broad participation and lower volatility indicated that the recovery extended beyond a small group of index heavyweights, although the technology-led weakness remained a risk for the next session.
