- The CAC 40 stood at 7,974.40 points at 12:24 p.m. CET on October 30, 2026, up 0.05 percent on the day.
- France's economy contracted 0.1 percent quarter on quarter in the third quarter, while annual inflation accelerated to 3.4 percent in October.
- Higher oil prices and weakness in technology stocks limited the broader market's momentum.
The CAC 40 was broadly stable in Europe's midday trading on Friday, October 30, 2026, after a strong previous session. The benchmark stood at 7,974.40 points at 12:24 p.m. CET, up 4.40 points, or 0.05 percent, according to RTTNews. The index had moved between 7,957.61 and 7,992.00 points during the session.
Economic data tempers risk appetite
French shares faced a mixed macroeconomic backdrop. Preliminary data showed that French gross domestic product contracted 0.1 percent quarter on quarter in the third quarter, missing expectations for 0.1 percent growth after stagnation in the second quarter. At the same time, annual inflation accelerated to 3.4 percent in October from 3.1 percent in September. Trading Economics reported that the CAC 40 was nevertheless trading near a one-month high.
The combination of weaker output and faster price growth complicates the outlook for French equities. It points to softer domestic activity while leaving less room for expectations of easier monetary policy. That is an interpretation of the data rather than a confirmed explanation for the index's intraday move.
Oil and technology stocks in focus
Higher crude prices also weighed on sentiment. RTTNews reported that front-month Brent crude had risen as high as 114.07 US dollars a barrel before easing to around 112.60 US dollars, still as much as 1.6 percent above the previous close. The same report said technology stocks were under pressure, with STMicroelectronics among the weaker CAC 40 constituents, while Sanofi, Pernod Ricard and Eurofins Scientific were among the stronger performers at the open.
The CAC 40 therefore remained close to the prior session's 7,970-point close, which Ad-hoc-News coverage described as a 1.05 percent gain. With the Paris session still open, the midday reading should be treated as an intraday level rather than a closing result. Further direction depends on the balance between earnings-related support and the market's response to growth, inflation and energy-price signals.
