- The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 572.25 points, or 1.09%, to 51,770.31 on October 30, 2026.
- Concerns about heavy artificial intelligence investment and weakly received results from Amazon and Intel drove a broad technology sell-off.
- The index still gained 1.70% in October but recorded its largest one-week decline since the week ending October 2.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended Friday's session at 51,770.31, falling 572.25 points, or 1.09%, as renewed concerns about artificial intelligence spending intensified a sell-off in technology shares. The session was already closed when the late European reporting window began. The closing figures were reported as preliminary market values by Morningstar, citing Dow Jones Market Data and FactSet.
AI spending drives broad retreat
Friday's decline followed disappointing quarterly results from Amazon and Intel released late on Thursday. According to Reuters, published by Fidelity, investors focused on the scale of companies' AI-related spending, cash burn and uncertainty over when those investments might generate adequate returns. Amazon and Intel shares came under pressure, while chip stocks also fell sharply.
The technology-led selling extended beyond the Dow. Reuters reported that the Nasdaq Composite was down 3.4% in afternoon trading, while the S&P 500 was down 2.08% at that point. The Dow's smaller decline reflects its different composition, although the index also includes large technology companies.
October gain remains intact
Despite Friday's drop, the Dow rose 864.26 points, or 1.70%, during October, according to the Morningstar report. The monthly gain was the index's strongest one-month advance since June 2026. The Dow also remained positive for 16 of the past 18 months.
Weekly performance was weaker: the index lost 444.85 points, or 0.85%, over the week, ending a three-week winning streak. The closing level was 4.74% below the record close of 54,349.12 reached on August 5, 2026, and marked the lowest close since October 14, according to the same data.
Index context for investors
The S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the Dow as a price-weighted measure of 30 US blue-chip companies covering all industries except transportation and utilities. Friday's move therefore provides a snapshot of large established US companies, but it does not represent the performance of the broader market or of technology stocks alone.
For investors, the immediate focus remains whether rising AI capital expenditure can translate into sustainable revenue, earnings and cash flow. The Dow's monthly gain shows that Friday's decline did not erase October's advance, but the weekly loss highlights the market's more selective stance toward companies with heavy AI investment plans.
