- Technology stocks weakened after disappointing updates from Amazon and Intel revived concerns about the returns on artificial-intelligence investment.
- Stronger company results and eurozone growth provided some support, while France's contraction and renewed inflation pressure remained risks.
The Euro Stoxx 50 came under pressure during Europe's Friday session as renewed selling in technology shares offset gains in selected defensive and energy-related companies. At 11:57 a.m. Berlin time on October 30, the index stood at 6,156 points, down 0.8 percent, according to finanzen.ch.
Technology weighs on European shares
The main source of pressure was a renewed global technology selloff. Disappointing results and outlook signals from Amazon and Intel increased doubts about whether the large capital expenditure required for artificial-intelligence infrastructure will generate sufficient returns. The weakness spread to European semiconductor and technology stocks. Morningstar reported that ASML fell more than 5 percent after Intel pointed to a prolonged slowdown in computer sales.
The move was not uniform across the market. Morningstar said energy stocks benefited from higher oil prices, while Sanofi rose more than 5 percent after reporting stronger results. AstraZeneca and BP also reported positive third-quarter developments, providing some support for parts of the broader European market. These individual gains, however, did not offset the technology-led weakness in the pan-European benchmark.
Growth surprise meets inflation risks
Economic data offered a mixed signal for investors. Eurozone gross domestic product expanded 0.4 percent in the third quarter, according to the report, but growth slowed from the second quarter. France's economy contracted, adding to concerns about the country's fiscal position and the pressure from higher borrowing costs. At the same time, inflation accelerated in several large eurozone economies, complicating the outlook for monetary policy after the European Central Bank left interest rates unchanged on Thursday.
For investors, the session highlighted the competing forces currently shaping the index: resilient corporate earnings and parts of the economy on one side, and valuation, financing and growth concerns around technology investment on the other. The Euro Stoxx 50 was still trading during the configured midday slot, so the quoted level should be read as an intraday value rather than a closing result. STOXX identifies the index as a real-time benchmark with dissemination from 09:00 to 18:00 CET on its official index page.
