Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closed Friday, November 6, at 24,481.86 points, down 315.12 points or 1.27 percent. The closing level and daily change were reported by Xinhua via NAMPA. The decline followed Thursday's close at 24,796.98 points, when the benchmark had gained 3.67 percent.
Technology shares lead the retreat
Sentiment weakened after a sharp overnight sell-off in US technology shares spread to Asia-Pacific markets. The pressure was concentrated in companies linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure, including memory-chip, printed-circuit-board and optical-communications suppliers. Investors questioned whether the rapid expansion of data centers and semiconductor capacity can generate sufficient returns, while concerns about tighter scrutiny of the artificial-intelligence industry added to the risk aversion.
A detailed Futu report said the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 1.83 percent to 4,078.23 points. AI hardware stocks were among the weakest performers, while defensive utilities and high-dividend companies moved higher as investors sought more stable cash flows. Li Ning also outperformed after announcing a special dividend.
Weekly gain remains intact
Despite Friday's retreat, the Hang Seng Index gained 5.10 percent over the week, according to the Futu report. That weekly advance provides context for the decline: Friday's move reduced part of the previous session's rally rather than erasing the week's recovery. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 1.13 percent to 8,274.10 points, while the technology sub-index declined more sharply.
Investors were also focused on the October US nonfarm payrolls report due later on Friday, according to the market report. Its release was a potential near-term test for global risk appetite after the technology-led sell-off. The Hang Seng's immediate direction remains particularly sensitive to the valuation of AI-linked companies, overseas technology performance and expectations for data-center investment.
