- The Hang Seng Index closed at 23,294.42 on October 30, up 1.46% or 335.77 points.
- Financial, consumer, energy and shipping stocks supported the rebound, while AI hardware remained under pressure.
- The index still lost 5.36% in October, with China’s official manufacturing PMI due on October 31 as the next major market signal.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index ended the October 30 session at 23,294.42 points, gaining 335.77 points or 1.46%. The close followed Thursday’s 0.59% decline and marked a rebound above the 23,000-point level. The index’s performance and the closing calculation were reported by Morningstar, citing Dow Jones Market Data and FactSet.
Broad support offsets technology weakness
The rebound was supported by gains across several economically sensitive groups. RTHK reported that financials led sector gains, while mainland property developers also advanced. Consumer staples gained as investors rotated toward areas viewed as less exposed to the global technology sell-off. Turnover was HKD 214.32 billion, according to the broadcaster.
Energy and shipping shares added further support. Radiocor attributed part of the market’s strength to bargain hunting in technology heavyweights after recent declines, as well as optimism following strong quarterly results from SK Hynix. The same report said shipping and port stocks rallied alongside purchases of Alibaba and Tencent.
AI concerns remain a market headwind
The recovery was not broad enough to remove the market’s technology risk. RTHK said AI-related shares remained under pressure after a sell-off in US technology stocks renewed concerns about the returns on heavy AI spending. The Hang Seng Tech Index rose 0.3% to about 3,754 points, but remained close to a two-year low. This divergence indicates that the month-end advance did not represent a full recovery in the most AI-sensitive parts of the Hong Kong market.
October loss leaves focus on China data
Despite Friday’s gain, the Hang Seng Index fell 5.36% during October, according to Morningstar’s Dow Jones Market Data summary. The index also posted a 0.87% weekly gain, ending a two-week losing streak. The next scheduled macroeconomic signal is China’s official October manufacturing purchasing managers’ index, due from the National Bureau of Statistics on Saturday, October 31. Reuters reported that economists polled by the agency expected the index at 50.0, compared with 50.1 in September.
