The Hang Seng Index closed higher on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, as buying returned to healthcare, gold and technology shares. The benchmark gained 393.53 points, or 1.67 percent, to finish at 23,919.50. Based on the previous session close of 23,525.97, the move marked a clear recovery after the index had initially traded lower.
RTHK reported that the Hang Seng advanced for a fourth consecutive session. The same report said mainland Chinese equities also rose, with the Shanghai Composite gaining 2.16 percent and the Shenzhen Component climbing 4.22 percent. Those gains provided a supportive regional backdrop for Hong Kong stocks.
Healthcare and technology lead recovery
The session was volatile. According to Futunn, the index dipped to about 23,385 points in early trading before pharmaceutical stocks led a broad afternoon advance. Gold shares then strengthened, while photovoltaic, robotics and AI hardware stocks joined the move. The report identified innovative drug stocks as the strongest theme and noted sharp gains among several WuXi-related companies.
Hard-tech shares also benefited from improved sentiment toward the AI supply chain. Futunn cited stronger-than-expected third-quarter results and guidance from AMD as a factor that eased concerns about slowing AI capital expenditure. This helped support a rebound in semiconductor and related hardware stocks, although the index move itself should not be attributed to a single catalyst.
Election uncertainty recedes
Political developments in the United States were another market focus. Borsa Italiana, carrying a Radiocor report, said that easing concerns about the implications of the US midterm elections supported sentiment. It also reported that Donald Trump accepted the results, with Democrats securing majorities in both chambers of Congress. The report said the Hong Kong private sector returned to expansion in October, with the S&P Global PMI rising to 50.2 from 49.2 in September.
The combination of a mainland market rally, reduced election uncertainty and renewed interest in healthcare and technology created a constructive backdrop for the Hang Seng. The index ended the session near its high, but the day also showed that investor sentiment remains sensitive to developments in US policy, AI spending and sector-specific earnings.
