The IBEX 35 ended Thursday's session at 18,857.6 points, down 25.9 points or 0.14% from the previous close of 18,883.5 points. The Spanish benchmark finished its second consecutive session lower, according to Europa Press. The closing level kept the index below 18,900 points, although it remained above the day's opening level of 18,689.1 points.
Banking stocks weigh on the index
The session began under pressure from financial stocks after a series of company results. BBVA reported attributed net profit of 9.066 billion euros for the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 13.6% year on year, but its shares fell 2.58% by the close. CaixaBank declined 1.72%, Unicaja lost 1.62% and Mapfre led the index's declines with a fall of 3.74%.
The broader results picture was mixed. Repsol reported net profit of 5.006 billion euros for the first nine months, up 325% year on year, with the result influenced by a 943 million euro inventory revaluation. Its shares rose 3.05%. Indra gained 3.55% after reporting net profit of 355.5 million euros, up 22%, while Ferrovial was the strongest performer, adding 3.8%.
ECB pauses as oil stays elevated
The European Central Bank left its three key interest rates unchanged on October 29. The deposit facility rate remained at 2.50%, while the main refinancing rate stayed at 2.65% and the marginal lending facility at 2.90%, according to the European Central Bank.
Energy prices remained part of the market backdrop. Brent crude stood at 113.78 US dollars per barrel at the close of European markets, down 1.34%, while West Texas Intermediate was at 100.88 US dollars, down 1.85%. Europa Press linked the day's market context to developments in the Middle East, the results cycle and the ECB decision. The IBEX 35 nevertheless underperformed other major European benchmarks, including France's CAC 40 and Germany's DAX, which closed higher.
Index remains below recent peak
Thursday's decline followed a 1.45% drop on Wednesday, when the index closed at 18,883.5 points after reaching 19,160.6 points on Tuesday. The latest move therefore leaves the benchmark in a consolidation phase below its recent closing high. For investors, the combination of pressure on banks, elevated energy prices and unchanged ECB rates remains the central context for the next Spanish market session.
