Indonesia's IDX Composite closed sharply lower on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as broad-based selling pushed the benchmark to its weakest level of the session. The index fell 184.25 points, or 3.49%, to 5,098.06, according to ANTARA. The previous session had ended at 5,282.31.

Broad selling reaches every sector

The decline followed an early rebound that quickly faded. Market participants shifted toward risk reduction as the session progressed, with selling continuing through the second trading session. The LQ45 index of leading Indonesian stocks fell 4.48% to 515.28, underscoring the pressure on large and liquid companies.

All 11 IDX-IC sector indexes ended lower. The industrial sector recorded the steepest decline at 4.64%, followed by basic materials at 4.53% and infrastructure at 4.24%, according to Katadata DataBoks. Trading activity reached about 23.26 billion shares across roughly 1.32 million transactions, with total value of approximately IDR 11.28 trillion. The same report counted 624 declining stocks, compared with 98 advancing and 70 unchanged.

Foreign flows and MSCI concerns

Foreign investors remained net sellers as the market weakened. Kompas reported net foreign selling of IDR 1.52 trillion for the session and cited pressure on major banks, including BBCA, BBRI, BMRI and BBNI. The rupiah was also under strain, with Bank Indonesia's JISDOR rate at IDR 18,183 per US dollar on Wednesday, October 28.

The market backdrop included continued uncertainty over MSCI's warning that Indonesia could be moved from emerging-market to standalone status because of concerns about ownership transparency and alleged coordinated trading. In a Reuters report carried by Kontan English, Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti called the MSCI situation a short-term shock and said the central bank would remain focused on stabilizing the rupiah. The statement offers reassurance, but it does not remove the classification risk or the immediate pressure from capital outflows.

For investors, Thursday's close points to renewed volatility after the IDX Composite had finished the previous session higher. The next session will be judged against the 5,098.06 close, with foreign flows, currency stability, global rate expectations and developments in Indonesia's market reforms likely to remain important reference points.
