The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8,908.1 on Friday, October 30, according to PerthNow. The index added 16.3 points, or 0.18 percent, in a volatile session after briefly reaching 8,992. The gain left the benchmark 1.28 percent higher for the week, according to Samso.
Retail Shares Offset Technology Weakness
Eight of the 11 sectors finished higher. Consumer discretionary was the strongest sector, rising 2.73 percent as JB Hi-Fi gained 6.21 percent and Wesfarmers advanced 3.61 percent. Energy stocks also supported the index, with Woodside Energy up 1.80 percent and Santos 1.31 percent as oil prices moved higher amid renewed Middle East tensions, PerthNow reported.
The advance was restrained by technology stocks, which remained under pressure after a sharp decline in US technology shares. Samso reported that the information technology sector fell 1.34 percent, with Xero down 2.39 percent and NextDC off 4.86 percent. Materials also weakened by 0.87 percent, while consumer staples declined 0.97 percent.
Coles Update Weighs on Staples
Coles was one of the session's largest drags, falling 7.67 percent to A$21.66. Its supermarkets sales revenue rose 3.6 percent to A$10.32 billion for the 13 weeks to September 27, but comparable sales growth slowed to 2.7 percent from 4.6 percent a year earlier. The company also indicated that first-half profit would be flat, according to Samso. The update highlighted continued pressure on household budgets and competition for value-conscious shoppers.
Elsewhere in the consumer sector, Endeavour Group rose 4.31 percent after reporting higher first-quarter sales. Reece gained 8.44 percent after its first-quarter revenue increased 4.3 percent, while Catalyst Metals fell 24.76 percent after reducing its fiscal 2027 production guidance.
RBA Decision in Focus
Investors now turn to the Reserve Bank of Australia's Monetary Policy Board meeting on November 3. The decision and accompanying Statement on Monetary Policy are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. AEDT, according to Samso. The meeting follows recent inflation and producer-price data that have kept interest-rate expectations central to the outlook for Australian equities.
