The S&P/ASX 200 ended Friday, October 30, at 8,908.10 points, adding 16.30 points or 0.18 percent from the previous close. The result came after a volatile session in which the index briefly reached 8,992 points before giving back much of its advance. The close was the index's highest since September 9, according to Morningstar, citing Dow Jones Market Data and FactSet.
Local sectors offset global technology weakness
Eight of the 11 sectors finished higher. Consumer discretionary shares led the advance, with Wesfarmers gaining 3.61 percent and JB Hi-Fi rising 6.21 percent. Energy stocks also supported the index as oil prices moved higher amid renewed Middle East tensions. Woodside Energy rose 1.80 percent and Santos gained 1.31 percent. Healthcare stocks, including CSL, added further support.
The gains came despite renewed pressure on technology shares after a sharp sell-off in US technology stocks. Alphabet's decline revived concerns about the returns from heavy artificial-intelligence investment, weighing on local technology names including Xero and NextDC. PerthNow, citing NewsWire, reported that the ASX 200 nevertheless finished higher after the volatile session.
Coles weighs on consumer staples
Coles fell 7.67 percent to 21.66 Australian dollars after its first-quarter update showed comparable sales growth of 2.7 percent, below the 3.0 percent market expectation cited in the report. The stock was briefly down 12.5 percent after the announcement. The decline contrasted with strength in retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and Wesfarmers.
RBA decision remains in focus
Investors are now looking toward the Reserve Bank of Australia's policy meeting on November 3. The bank is scheduled to announce its decision at 2:30 p.m. Australian Eastern Daylight Time, according to the ABC. The prospect of another rate increase remains an important consideration for bank, property and consumer shares.
For the week, the benchmark gained 1.28 percent, according to Morningstar's Dow Jones Market Data summary. The move reflects continued support from financials and selected cyclical sectors, although the session also showed how quickly global technology sentiment and company-specific earnings updates can alter the market's intraday direction.
