The Taiwan Weighted Index ended Friday's session sharply lower as investors cut exposure to technology shares amid renewed doubts about the returns from heavy artificial-intelligence investment. The benchmark closed at 45,211.83 on October 30, down 1,156.50 points, or 2.49 percent, from the previous session.

The closing figures and the session range were reported by Focus Taiwan, which said the index moved between 44,726.26 and 46,139.79. Turnover reached NT$877.73 billion. The previous close was 46,368.33, so the point loss corresponds to the reported 2.49 percent decline.

AI concerns weigh on technology shares

Focus Taiwan attributed the pressure to heavy losses in US technology stocks overnight. The report said disappointing sales from Alphabet and concern about Amazon's rising AI spending renewed questions over whether the enormous capital commitments to AI infrastructure will produce comparable returns. Those concerns encouraged investors to trim positions in technology shares that had risen substantially earlier in the year.

The electronics index fell 2.90 percent. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the market's largest company by value, declined 1.86 percent to NT$2,370.00 and contributed approximately 360 points to the TAIEX's fall, according to the same report. MediaTek dropped 3.21 percent, ASE Technology Holding lost 2.20 percent and AI-chip designer AIchip Technologies fell 6.93 percent. Hon Hai Precision Industry declined 1.01 percent, while Acer and Asustek also finished lower.

Defensive pockets offered limited support

Not all sectors moved lower. Chunghwa Telecom rose 1.27 percent, Far EasTone Telecommunications gained 0.88 percent and Uni-President Enterprises advanced 1.52 percent. The financial index slipped only 0.16 percent, suggesting comparatively greater resilience outside the technology complex. Even so, these gains were not large enough to offset the broad selling in semiconductor and AI-related stocks.

Foreign institutional investors sold a net NT$112.47 billion in Taiwanese shares, according to the Focus Taiwan report. The index also moved below the 45,300-point level identified in the report as a technical reference associated with the 120-day moving average. That observation points to continued downside risk, but it is a market assessment rather than a forecast or investment recommendation.
