The Taiwan Weighted index, also known as the TAIEX, ended Thursday's session at 46,368.33 points, down 667.25 points or 1.42 percent from the previous close. The decline followed a 2.04 percent rally on Wednesday and came despite losses narrowing from an intraday drop of as much as 959.8 points.

Focus Taiwan, citing CNA, reported turnover of NT$789.15 billion. The figure was higher than the NT$722.14 billion recorded during Wednesday's advance, when the index was supported by a rally in US technology stocks and renewed enthusiasm for artificial-intelligence investment.

Technology stocks lead the retreat

According to Taiwan News, all of the TAIEX's most heavily weighted stocks closed lower. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing fell 0.41 percent to NT$2,415, while MediaTek dropped 4.49 percent to NT$4,045. Foxconn declined 1.39 percent, Delta Electronics lost 4.52 percent and ASE Technology fell 1.73 percent.

Foundry stocks were particularly weak amid concerns about global price competition and lower fourth-quarter capacity utilization at mature-node manufacturers. United Microelectronics closed at its daily limit-down, while Vanguard International Semiconductor fell 6.57 percent and Mosel Vitelic declined 5.28 percent. Optical-component shares also came under pressure, with Largan Precision down 8.21 percent and Genius Electronic Optical at its daily limit-down.

Defensive sectors provide limited support

Buying interest shifted toward less cyclical areas. Taiwan News reported that biotechnology gained 1.1 percent and financial stocks rose 1.05 percent. Telecommunications shares also outperformed, with Chief Telecom gaining more than 7.23 percent, Taiwan Mobile rising 1.51 percent and Chunghwa Telecom adding 0.96 percent. Win Semiconductors was a notable exception within the technology complex, closing at its daily limit-up of NT$594.

Analyst Chien Po-yi, quoted by Taiwan News, said the retreat reflected insufficient buying interest after Wednesday's strong rebound. From an investor perspective, the quarterly moving average and trading volume are key technical reference points: easing selling pressure near support could indicate stabilization, while a break below support on higher volume would point to greater correction risk.
